What was Courtney Cooks Medical Issue
Courtney Cook, a 21-year-old from Texas, was diagnosed with a rare condition called primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) when she was just 18 months old. PCD is a disorder of the cilia, which are tiny hairlike structures that line the airways and help to clear mucus and other debris from the lungs. In people with PCD, the cilia do not work properly, which can lead to chronic respiratory infections.
Cook has had to deal with lung infections since she was a child, and has been hospitalized many times as a result. In 2016, she underwent a double lung transplant in an effort to improve her quality of life. Unfortunately, her body rejected the transplanted lungs, and she passed away in 2017.
Cook’s story highlights the importance of awareness for rare diseases like PCD. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for patients like Cook who live with this condition.
