What Happens in The Cook of Castamar Book?

Castamar is a small town in the province of Burgos, in the north-central region of Spain. The town is situated on a hillside overlooking a valley with the River Ebro running through it. The cook, Juan de Dios, is a widower who lives with his daughter Rosa and son-in-law Antonio in a house on the outskirts of Castamar.

De Dios is an expert cook and was once employed by the Duke of Medina Sidonia. He now works as a chef in a local restaurant. One day, de Dios receives a letter from the Duke, asking him to come to Seville and cook for him once again.

De Dios agrees to go, but only if Rosa and Antonio can come with him. The Duke agrees, and so the family sets off for Seville. On their journey, they meet many interesting characters, including an old woman who tells them about a cursed castle in the nearby town of Arenas Blancas.

The woman says that anyone who spends one night in the castle will be turned into stone. The family eventually arrives at the Duke’s palace in Seville, where de Dios begins work on preparing a special dish for him – paella valenciana. However, before he can finish it, disaster strikes: Antonio falls ill and dies suddenly.

A devastated Rosa returns home to Castamar with her father’s body. Back in Castamar, Juan de Dios decides to make use of his skills as a cook to help others in need. He sets up a soup kitchen for the poor and begins cooking meals for them every day.

As word of his kindness spreads, more and more people come to visit him – including some very important guests…
