Today marks the 246th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. Founded in 1775, the Marines have a long and storied history of service to our nation. From the Revolutionary War to present day, Marines have answered the call to duty time and time again.

Today, we celebrate the men and women who have chosen to wear the eagle, globe, and anchor and defend our freedom. Cookies Tavern is proud to be a Marine-friendly establishment. We welcome all Marines – past, present, and future – to come in and enjoy a cold beer or shot on us today.

Tun Tavern

Tun Tavern, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is considered to be the birthplace of the United States Marine Corps. The tavern was founded in 1681 by Samuel Carpenter and his wife Elizabeth. It was named after the Tun fish that was used to make a popular type of soup at the time.

The tavern became a popular meeting place for local politicians and businessmen. In 1775, during the American Revolutionary War, Tun Tavern served as a recruiting station for the Continental Marines. The first Commandant of the Marine Corps, Colonel Nicholas Heyman, was also recruited at Tun Tavern.
