When I was little, my grandpa liked to say, (please excuse my paraphrasing) that it’s a shame that by the time you’re old enough to buy as much ice cream as you want, you can’t eat it all. Now, it’s possible that he meant something a bit more expansive than that statement’s literal interpretation, but odds are, despite my grandpa’s generally serious disposition, he meant exactly what he said. The man loves his ice cream.
In the interest of providing more content* I’ve decided to start reviewing candy! Please, let me know what you think of this addition in the comments. I’ll be keeping these a bit shorter than my typical posts, but lets hope no less sweet:
*Andrew thinks this is just an excuse to consume a ridiculous amount of candy… There might be some truth in that statement, but really it’s all in the interest of a greater good, right?
I’ll take nearly any excuse to spend an afternoon baking for an appreciative audience, so when my dear friend Lashley invited Andrew and I to visit for Picnic Day in Davis a week and a half ago I knew that I needed a few tasty treats up my sleeve. The lineup: lemon bars, fudge, and a chocolate pretzel tart. Lemon bars and fudge are well-loved standbys that I’ve made countless times and knew wouldn’t fail me, so I decided to take a (minor) risk by baking my first tart. I had been eyeing this recipe for quite a while; the seductive combination of salty pretzels, creamy almond butter and dark chocolate brought it to the top of a ever-expanding queue of recipes to make ASAP*.
Among my many food quirks, perhaps the one that stands out the most is my unabashed love for oats. I would happily eat oatmeal for breakfast every day, and generally do; I have been known to “pregame” a brunch out with a small bowl of oatmeal, or eat it for dinner, in order to get my daily fix. Hell, I even list oatmeal as one of my interests on Facebook. I realize that most normal individuals do not share my oat fanaticism, and are not compelled to drop everything when a recipe combining oats and almonds (another top 10 favorite food*) pops up, but in this case you should.
